Motherhood

So this semester I am taking a Marriage and Family Relations class at BYU. It is incredible! My favorite class along with Mission Prep from Randy Bott. But...for an assignment we have to read these talks on the roles of women in the church and some things really stood out to me, so I thought I would share them with you all.

"Motherhood is the greatest potential influence either for good or ill in human life. The mother's image is the first that stamps itself on the unwritten page of the young child's mind. It is her caress that first awakens a sense of security; her kiss, the first realization of affection; her sympathy and tenderness, the first assurance that there is love in the world...This ability and willingness properly to rear children, the gift to love, and eagerness, yes, longing to express it in soul development, make motherhood the noblest office or calling in the world. She who can paint a masterpiece or write a book that will influence millions deserves the admiration and the plaudits of mankind; but she who rears successfully a family of healthy, beautiful sons and daughters, whose influence will be felt through generations to come,...deserves the highest honor that man can give, and the choicest blessings of God." --President David O. McKay

"In the eternal perspective, children--not possessions, not position, not prestige--are our greatest jewels." --President Ezra Taft Benson

"When you have fully complemented your husband in home life and borne the children, growing up full of faith, integrity, responsibility, and goodness, then you have achieved your accomplishment supreme without peer, and you will be the envy [of all] through time and eternity." --Spencer W. Kimball

"Mothers who help families pray and play together will stay together and will bless children's lives forever." --Ezra Taft Benson

Accept without reservation the Savior for what He was, Joseph Smith for what he was, and President Gordon B. Hinckley for what he is. God will not ennoble a person, man or woman, who refuses to uphold by faith, prayer, and works those whom God has called and ordained to preside over them." --James E. Faust

"Following the priesthood of the Church is an expression of faith in the Lords continuing guidance of His Church. It is willing acceptance of the principle of divine agency. All of you will have to sometime answer to your natural womanly instincts, which the Prophet Joseph said are according to your natures. He said, If you live up to your privileges, the angels cannot be restrained from being your associates. You should respond generously to those instincts and promptings to do good. Hold your soul very still, and listen to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit. Follow the noble, intuitive feelings planted deep within your souls by Deity in the previous world. In this way you will be responding to the Holy Spirit of God and will be sanctified by truth. By so doing, you will be eternally honored and loved. Much of your work is to enrich mankind with your great capacity for care and mercy." --James E. Faust

I just love hearing things like this. It is so empowering and uplifting. I am so excited for the opportunity to be mother and raise righteous children in this gospel. It is an exciting thought. Hope you enjoyed these quotes as much as I did.

One of My Dreams

What is this? Anyone know?

It's a cello. This is my all time favorite instrument in the history of the universe. I have played this instrument since I was in 4th grade--that's about 11 years. I'm not very good at it and don't have much time to practice, but playing it and hearing the sound of it brings me great joy. It is the best instrument because it is not too high like the violin and not too low like the bass and it doesn't get looked over quite as much as the viola (which is often mistaken for as a violin by those who don't really know their stringed instruments). It has this deep, but sweet mellow sound. It can be so joyous or so depressing sounding. It is the most well-rounded and beautiful instruments. It's also absolutely stunning by appearance. I need to make a point of playing mine a lot more. I think my own cello is beautiful...unfortunately, I am at school and can't take a picture of it right now, but maybe I will eventually.

Want to know why I chose to play the cello when I was a naive 4th grader? It was because in the elementary school orchestra, the cellists got to sit down while everyone else (bass included) had to stand. Ha I am so lazy! Who knew I would fall so madly in love with this instrument.

So now to telling you one of my dreams. There is this Chinese man named Yo-Yo Ma. He has been playing the cello since he was like four years old. He is INCREDIBLE! Absolute favorite cellist ever. I'm not sure how much tickets are, but before I die, my dream is to see him perform live. I haven't heard of him performing in Utah or Arizona often, but I know he performs in New York quite frequently. So if he doesn't come to me...I just might have to go to him. Maybe one day my husband (unknown at this point) will surprise me and take me to see him in New York. Would that be amazing?! Wahoo! Go Yo-Yo Ma! He's my hero!

One Bride for One of Those Brothers

Fellow Blog readers: I have a new love. Remember that movie/musical called Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? Well I have seen it three times within the last 24 hours. Ya, that's right. My roommates and I watched it last night, this morning while getting ready for church and just watched it again tonight. You might say that is ridiculous, but I say it's lovely. :-) Just look at these men...

Ignore the girls...they aren't important. The names of these brothers in order from left to right is: Frank, Caleb, Gideon, Daniel, Ephraim, and Ben. They are my new loves. They can sing and dance while chopping wood in the middle of winter. Haha lame sounding, I know, but something about their ruggedness just makes my heart melt. They are so cute. My favorites are in this order: 1. Frank, 2. Ben, 3. Daniel. I'm not really in love with the other ones, but they are great.

Watching this movie makes me want a man who can pick me up like I weigh nothing, be so sweet and cheezy and say things like, "You're the prettiest girl I ever aquainted," but also put up one of the meanest fights that could break the walls of a barn down and who will love me so much that he kidnaps me from the town and take me up into the mountains where we are snowed in for the whole winter. Wouldn't that be just grand?

Well maybe I don't want things like that to happen exactly like that, but having a man around who is rugged and gentle all at the same time. A lumberjack! So manly, I love it. Better yet...I just love men! Ha but overall...this musical is great. If anyone feels like buying it for me on DVD so we don't have to rent the VHS from the public library then I would be super happy. If you haven't, you must watch Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!!

P.S. Tonight when we watched it, we all wore flannel shirts in honor of our wilderness men whom we are in love with.

Female Deodorant

In one of my classes there is this kid who sat by me on the first day of classes and now sits by me EVERY class period. If the seat isn't open, he chews out whoever is in it and says they stole "his" seat.

This kid is not attractive...not bad looking, but just not really my type. And he is a returned missionary who acts like a pre-missionary. He also is always doodling on his paper words written out in the gang-style bubble letters--the graffiti ones. It's strange. He also refers to himself as from the "O.V." with this gangster attitude toward it. Like anyone is supposed to know what that is. I think it's like Ogden Valley or something. All I know is that is it in Utah and he is trying to make living in Utah sound like a really cool thing. Not that it's bad...just not gangster.

Anyways, the point of this post is that I think he wears women deodorant. I have this deodorant, Lady Speed Stick (Powder Fresh), and I used to wear it all the time. Now the scent makes me sick and it's this distinct smell that kind of has this chalky taste to it when you smell it. Weird,I know, but it's one of those scents I can't handle anymore for that reason. And I smell it every time he comes to sit by me. It goes away when we separate and it comes when he arrives. It makes me almost gag.

Long story short, I think this guy wears female deodorant. That's gross and weird. End of story.

Chivalry needs to be remembered and taught

Crazy it is already February and I haven't posted anything since like November. It's mainly because of two reasons: one, I have no time for extra stuff like this and when I do, blogging is not first on my procrastination list and two, I don't think much of excitement has happened in my life so not much to blog about.

But I have something somewhat cool to share. I went rock climbing today! Not indoors at some gym, but outside in a real rock canyon. I have been repelling before, but I have never been rock climbing. I think rock climbing is much more difficult. It was so hard this time because it was cold outside and snowy/rainy so my fingers were frozen. This made gripping the already slippery rock face difficult. The other hard part was that the rock face we climbed was smooth and flat. There were hardly and ledges to grip. I really would like to go again and again though until I get much better at it, but next time I go, I hope it is warmer. That would make it a lot more enjoyable.

Also, in the end of March I might go to Disneyland with Braden's cousin's! I just need to find a flight I can afford that fits my schedule. I have been dying to go to Disneyland for quite some time and here is my opportunity. In addition to Disneyland would include a day at the BEACH!!

Yep, the beach! With warm sand, roaring waves and the bright sun beating down on me. I miss my dear friend the sun. He has left me for quite some time, but we will be reunited soon enough. I can't wait for that.

Tonight I went shopping with a guy friend of mine. After, we ate dinner at the Cannon Center (The cafeteria for freshman dorms). This was an interesting experience. I totally forgot how strange and immature freshman can be. Of course not ALL freshman are strange and immature, but it sure is a difference compared to return missionaries. I never noticed the difference as drastically until tonight. I met some of the freshman boys for BYU's baseball team and boy are these kids immature and disrespectful.

I am not even exaggerating. My friend (he's on the baseball team) and I went and sat at the table near some of his teammates and ate dinner. The whole time, these other guys were making rude comments and just being so immature. They were even throwing food at each other and swearing up a storm. It was disgusting. And then I decided to be polite and ask them their names and stuff to just get to know them a little better. Half of the table tried to tell me their fake names such as "Sabastian" and stuff like that. And one even touched my butt! I was ticked when he did that and had to use every bit of inner strength and self-control I had to not punch him so hard. I mean, who does that?! We are in college people! That is not the way to get a girl's attention or to NOT get her attention. It's a way to make a fool of yourself and disrespect someone so they know how big of a retard you are! Oh man, if I ever see him again and he does something of that nature again he will wish he had never laid his hands on me. Someone needs to teach him some manners and ASAP. I am so ticked!

These boys were all freshman and although a few of them were kind and respectful, others were quite the opposite. I sure hope they go on missions because those two years really force a boy to grow up and become a man. I am so grateful the Church has young men go on missions as soon as they turn 19 because they sure need it. I am also extremely grateful for my wonderful guy friends I have who have been so respectful to me and other women after and even before their missions. Their parents taught them well and I hope they continue to teach their children and so on for generations of the right way to treat women and how to behave. No one has an excuse to behave like that.

For anyone who reads this, make the decision now to teach your children (especially boys) how to behave and how to treat women for women are so sacred in God's eyes and things like that should not happen. Chivalry is not dead, it has just been forgotten and needs to be remembered and passed on. It is a beautiful and wonderful thing.

So glad I am not in a freshman dorm anymore...i'm just saying.

P.S. Yay for Superbowl tomorrow!

Rambles of Life

College...such a strange experience. It's weird to think that this one thing can basically decide your life. It's full of some of the best experiences...and then some of the worst. So much joy...and then so much stress. It's crazy! People can be so incredibly amazing. While others are, well...interesting.

Speaking of interesting people at college...I LOVE to "people watch". One of my favorite things is to go to the mall and sit down on a bench and just watch everyone. But I've learned of an even better place to do that--college. Pretty much any location of campus is full of interesting people. The library. The Cougareat (cafeteria). The bookstore. Brigham Square. And most definitely the Clyde building (engineer majors) and the HFAC (music majors). Those are some UNIQUE people to say the least. Instead of describing them to you myself, just go experience it for yourself. It's free entertainment.

I'm so ridiculous though. I always think other people are so weird...and rarely ever think that I'm most likely the weirder one, except for this one time. I was driving home from work, which is out in Murray, near Salt Lake City. I was driving during rush hour (which totally sucks) and some people were doing some awfully strange things. I don't even remember exactly what, but I was talking out-loud to myself saying, "humans are so strange. I don't even know why they do some things or what they are thinking."

A few minutes later, I was thinking about the experience and thought to myself, "That was EXTREMELY weird." Here I am, saying that other people (or rather humans...which is even more strange) are weird when I am in my car, alone, talking out loud to myself. It has since made me think twice about thinking people are strange because I am among the most psychotic at times.

Now back to college. Even though I am growing up and learning so many things spiritually and academically, I kind of can't wait to be done. At least be done with this year. I live everyday stressed that I will not get good enough grades to get into the accounting program here. Even though I say I have a back-up plan, I don't want to use it. I want things to work out how I am trying to plan them. I don't want to waste all this effort to go wasted. It is SO frustrating! And I will seriously feel like the biggest failure if I don't get in.

Also, what is with this horrible pressure for marriage? It's like the ONLY reason for going on dates is either you want to marry that person or you want to get some action...which I want neither. But can't people go on dates just for a fun activity to get to know someone? Asking someone on a date does not equal a marriage proposal! People need to just relax. It's ridiculous.

I'm not begging for dates or anything. I just think it is funny how people don't date much around here unless they plan on marrying that person. Not ALL people...just most. It's the common BYU mentality "speaking as a completely third party objective with absolutely no personal interest in the matter..." ***

Good news: I got a letter from Braden Lee Batchelor! He is doing fantastic! He is now the Ghana MTC arm wrestling champion! I'm so proud! He has been learning so much and having a great time doing it. He loves and is loved by all the missionaries he has been around. He left the MTC today and officially entered the field of the Ghana, Accra mission. I cannot wait to hear the stories and experiences he will have.

I love letters from missionaries, because I feel like I learn so much and that my testimony grows stronger just by reading what they are going through. This gospel is so incredible and is such a great blessing in my life. I am so grateful to have it and I am grateful that we have missionaries whose sole purpose is to share this great blessing to the rest of the world so others can experience the great happiness it brings. Every day I learn a new thing and strive to become better each day. I hope I can be an example for those around me to be better.

This reminds me...I was watching this show on the discovery channel about the drug methanphedamine and how destructive it is. It said that of all the first time users of this drug, 95 % can't help but to use it again. It is the most addictive, destructive and now most popular drug today.

When watching this small portion, I got really afraid to become a mom. I know that is kind of far ahead for me, but still...I am horrified to bring children into a world like this. And the world is only getting worse. I don't want my children to get stuck in those kind of traps. I want them to have a joyful, happy, enriching life. It's frightening to think that my job is to teach them that things like that are not good and to help them steer clear of it. But what if I mess up? Those are real, human lives at stake.

Even though it scares me to death to think of things like that, I am still so excited and honored to have the role of raising children. When the time comes, I will love it (good and bad times) and do my best to raise them to be righteous, intelligent people of society who will strive to bring joy into all the lives of those around you.

I am so rambling, but have you ever though about that? I've started thinking about it a little lately. It's become a goal of mine. It's difficult, but I am trying to be genuinely nice to everyone. Even the person at the cash register at the store. Instead of basically ignoring them, I want to smile at them and ask how THEIR day has been. I want them to get the feeling that I think and KNOW they are important. It's a very difficult task, and will take my whole life to accomplish, but I want to do it. I feel like if everyone made an effort to take a few seconds out of their schedule to smile and say hi and ask people how they are doing and actually listen, then this world we be a lot more joyful.

Though I may never know the impact I made in someone's life, I still want to make that impact. I want to at least help one person feel better about themselves or help turn their bad day into a good day. A day with at least one good thing in it, is not a completely bad day, right?

To sum up my goal in one phrase: Forget myself and serve others.

Sorry to totally ramble, but it's my blog, therefore my thoughts. You aren't required to read it. If I knew you were required to read it, I probably would have made it much shorter. But you aren't, so tough love.

P.S. I wish BYU gave us Veteran's Day off like everyone else! No fair!

Time Flies

Pretty much I am doing this post for the sake of my roommate Kaori. She ALWAYS checks my blog, even though she knows I have not updated my blog. I will basically just sum up what has happened thus far in my life.

I have moved back to this good old, packed town of Provo. It is extremely over-crowded with horrible drivers and strange personalities. Did I mention that the roads are awful! They are all cracked and not set up very well. The numbering system is nice, but they are not straight roads, but what can you expect when this place is full of mountains and hills.

School is quite difficult this year. It keeps me busy for sure. I am currently a pre-management major attempting to get into the Accounting Program for fall of 2010. The professors say we need an A- grade average to even be considered to be into this program. I would absolutely love to get into the program, but if I don't, I might major in finance or maybe mathematics so I can become a high school math teacher. We'll see. I will just "let the chips fall where they may."

Braden has officially left on the mission. He flew out early Thursday, October 22nd and reported the the Ghana MTC October 23rd, 2009. I have not heard from him at all yet and am getting overly anxious. I sent out two letters thus far...one in hopes that it would be there when he arrived and one on Monday--which will be my mailing day from now on (I hope). I really miss him and am sad that he is gone. It is extremely difficult to adjust to basically not having constant contact with him, but thanks to my roommates and friends and family (along with his family) I have been comforted a lot. My busy schedule keeps my mind off of missing him most of the time. Overall though, I know he is doing incredible things and I would not have him be anywhere else doing anything other than serving the people of Ghana and teaching The Gospel. I am extremely proud of his decision and love him even more now that he is serving others.

I got my first "ticket" and my first "accident" in the same week. For church we have our church meetings on campus--ours is in the Fine Arts Center. Most of the parking spaces are available for anyone to park in on Sundays...including most service vehicle spots. Well...not so lucky for me, I parked in one that is off limits all the time. But the parking sign was not visible nor clear for me to see. I came out of church with a 50 dollar parking ticket on my windshield. This did not make me happy. I went to the campus police and appealed my ticket. The cop was such a jerk. When I explained the confusion with the sign, he said, "You have to know how to read a sign to go to BYU." I was so offended. I wanted to tell him that he has to know how to make signs and put them up so there will be no confusion for anyone in the public, especially because there are plenty of people in this city who would struggle a lot worse than me when reading this sign. Because of my previously perfect record, he knocked my ticket down to 10 dollars. I was slightly relieved, but still not content about the situation. Pretty perturbed actually.

Three days later, Kaori and I were getting ready to go to class. We get in my car and I begin to back out of the parking lot when I notice my other roommate, Dani, backing out across from us. I wait where I am and let her back out first. To my left, there is a kid in a white honda waiting for me to back out...or so it seemed. I back out the rest of the way (because I was already partly out previously) and when I look down to switch my car into drive, I hear a
CRUNCH! Kaori and I look at each other, then behind me. This white Honda is practically in my bumper on the left side. I was furious. I get out of my car when he rolls down his window and asks, "Was that my fault?" I replied with a stern yes and he pulls into the nearest spot. When we meet him at his car, he gets out WITH ONLY ONE SHOE ON! I calmly asked him if he was putting his shoes on while driving and he guiltily answers with a "ya." He said it the way only a stupid coward would. I quickly exchanged insurance information with him and we went our ways. My car ended up with a gaping hole in the back left corner. The outer material basically shattered. There is more damage than just the bumper too. The appraiser estimated about 1200 dollars in damage. I took it in this Monday to be repaired and the shop found even more damage. Once my repair costs are completely solid, my insurance will go after his. He better tell the truth or I will hunt this kid down and...actually I will just remain very angry with him and hope that he has a guilty conscience for lying because he is definitely at fault. He saw me and was waiting for me. End of story.

Because my car is in the shop, I have a rental car this whole week. It is a sparkly brownish black Kia Rondo. Basically the color of poop and looks like a mommy car. Like mini SUV meets minivan. Strange. I didn't get to pick. The interior is really nice though. It is a 2009 model. Driving a new car and mixing things up is always fun.

Yesterday was the first snowfall. It is only October! This sucks so bad. I have a feeling this will be a L-O-N-G winter. I miss the Arizona heat. I hate dreading getting out of bed, but knowing I HAVE to. So not fun. I even had to drive through a snow storm on my way to work in Murray, Utah. It was pretty scary. Don't want to do that again.

Speaking of work, I have the best job right now. My brother Parker got it for me. I am the Channel Checker for Prime Time Communications. Basically I get pair really well to drive an hour, flip through 900 channels, state which ones do not have clear video and audio, and drive back an hour. I come whenever I can. It is way nice. The only stinky part is driving so far, especially when it starts snowing really bad.

This last Sunday I had to play my cello as an accompaniment for someone singing in my ward. It was the song "Come Thou Fount" from the Reflections of Christ photography display. It is an incredible song, but I think I butchered it. It was my first time accompanying someone ever! I was shaking horrible and could not even breathe. I do not intend on doing something like that again, but I have a feeling now that they know I can somewhat play the cello, they might ask me again. Ugh. I tried to remain hidden from the ward stuff so I didn't have to play. I get to nervous with the spotlight on me like that.

I think this about sums up what has happened in my life basically. Hope I didn't bore you too bad, but it's mostly to give Kaori something to read instead of teasing me for not updating my blog. I will try to update much more frequently, but we will see how long that takes.

For now,
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
