Ciao Tutti!
Well, I have good news...I woke up sick this morning! Wahoo. Nothing better than feeling like you got hit by a semi truck. But I took some medicine this morning. Hopefully this passes quickly. I think this p-day will be spent in bed. Especially because my companion doesn't feel very good either.
Oh man...this week we have spent alot of time doing publicity for english course because our class is too small. We need to get word out about this service so we can use it as a tool to find more investigators.
We got two new investigators though. One of them is an ex investigators from years ago...Nicola. He was great and said he agreed to meet with us again because he remembers how he FELT with the anziani. He said they made him feel truly like a brother and that even though we had just met, we made him feel like a brotehr too. He said he enjoys the feelings he has when he is with the missionaries and we taught him that that feeling is the holy ghost and that after baptism, he too can recieve it to be a constant companion. He was really great and i see great potential in him.
We passed out investigator Piero over to the anziani in Bitonto because he lives there. We are a little sad about that, but we know they will take good care of him. He is the one with the blue jacket sitting on the bench...the 'business man'.
So we hadn't seen the cat lady in three weeks at church, so we called her on Friday. Found out one of her cats died and she is way depressed. And the cat died on Christmas day. She hasn't done ANYTHING but cry since then. She said she doesn't even have the energy to shower (YIKES). SO we talked to her on the phone for awhile to comfort her and told her that going to church and being close to the Lord is going to make her feel better. She ended up coming to church, but would break into crying every now and then. We talked to the ward mission leader about her and he will talk to the R.S. president to make sure she is taken care of and loved. This lady has no one but her cats. Super sad.
Two of my skirts zippers are broken, so we went to this old lady who is an investigator of the other sorelle and she agreen to fix them. She also fed us cookies and made us eat all of them...well one kind of these cookies must have had coffee in them but when we asked, she was so offended because she knows we can't drink coffee. So we kept asking for more juice and when she turned around, we would slip some of the cookies up our sleeves. It was hillarious. I have never done something like that, though I have heard of many missionaries who have. So we left her house with sleeves full of cookies. Very missionary kind of experience.
We got invited by two Jehovah's Witnesses on the street to come listen to a speech in english on Sunday. So we went. And they were very nice. We stayed for their gospel study thing too. Very interesting. It is crazy how close they are but off at the same time. The read a verse from James 5 verse 14 about call in the elders to heal the sick and they said this healing is spiritually, not literally physical healing. And Sorella Hicks and I were sitting in between our two elders and we said to each other, ''actually, we are sitting between two elders who can actually heal you all physically.'' But we didn't say anything to be audible for the rest of them. I am so grateful that we have the restored gospel with all the missing pieces and we are able to interperet the scriptures in the meaning they were intended. We don't recieve our gospel from the bible, we recieve it directly from heaven and the bible AND BOOK OF MORMON help confirm the things we are taught directly from God. I love this gospel and cannot think of anything better anywhere else.
Thanks for all your prayers and support.
Love,
Sorella Heiner

A week of miracles!
[Email from 1/11/12]
Hello everyone!
This week has been an awesome week, but also one of the hardest too. Funny how that works, isn't it?
First of all, the hardest part was that Dora called us on Sunday and dropped us. I am really sad about that. She said thanks for everything we have done for her. We have helped her change her life for the better but that she chooses to go back to her old church. I can't believe how much it hurts to see people who truly have felt the spirit testify to them of the truthfulness of our message and be so close to having the great gift of the holy ghost and then let Satan get the best of them and give it all up. I know without a doubt though, that she will come back and accept the gospel and enter the waters of baptism. She has a firm testimony of prayer and the scriptures, she just is weak because she hasn't been meeting with us as often nor been coming to church due to the holidays. But we will give her a little bit of time to let the spirit work in her before we try her again. This experience only testifies to me more of the importance of the basics of the gospel: prayer, scripture study, and church attendance. They are like the three sides of a triangle and without one of them, you crumble. I think the biggest key to helping someone enter baptism is through church attendance. That is usually the key to what causes members to go in-active. We need the constant nourishment of the gospel, not only on our own in prayer and scripture study, but through other members around us. We are put in wards to build each other up...and by so doing, we cannot fall. So my challenge for everyone who is reading this...don't ever skip church! Do everything in your power to get to those three meetings and partake of that wonderful, powerful, and sacred sacrament. It is your anchor to the gospel.
We found three new investigators this week. Thursday we decided we were not going to go in for lunch until we found a new investigator. So we did house, and street, and didn't get much of anything. Then Sorella Hicks had this picture in her mind about a man sitting on a bench in a blue jacket. So we went to the central station and went talking to people. We found a man on a bench, so we talked to him, but he didn't speak any italian...or english. He was from Albania. So we gave him a pass along card and went along. Then talked to a lady from Georgia (the country) and kind of taught her about the BOM and then tried to pray with her but she wouldn't let us. She said the idea of saying a prayer with us our way scared her. So we didn't get her...yet. She did give us her number, and we will try to get a BOM in her language for her. So we kept going. Then we crossed the street and saw him...this man in a blue jacket, sitting on a bench. When we saw him, Sorella hicks had the impression to tell him that we've been talking to people all day and no one has been wanting to listen to us, as a business man, can he give us some advice and pointers to how we can do better. SHe thought that was weird, but we just said hi to him and did small talk. He started trying to sell olive oil to us and talking about how he is a business man...DING DING! perfect intro to our entrance. So we ask him for help and he is all game for that. So we sit on the bench and teach him about the Book of Mormon and all that and we say a prayer and ask if we can meet again to give him a BOM to read. He agrees and doesn't give us any advice of how we can be better, it went down like a normal lesson. It was awesome!! His name is Piero.
Then the next day, we were doing house late at night and I asked if we could take a different street than we normally take to get to our origionally planned street for finding. So we did, and then there was this huge group of pallazi and I felt like we should go in there and do house instead. So we went to the gate, and it was left open. (That is always a good sign, because one of the hardest parts is getting in the gate). So we try at the citoph for the first set of apartments and no success. Then we do the second. Nothing until the very last one and someone opens the door. It's this man. We do our little intro and out walks a women too. They initially say they don't have time, then ask if we are americans. We say yes. The woman wants to learn english because she is studying to become a chef. We tell her we teach english for free. She gets excited. Let's us in to get the information and we start talking and stuff. Then she asks us to eat dinner with them. We agree and sit down have dinner with these two people: Antonio and Rosalba. It was yummy. We said a prayer with them on the food, and taught them a little about a prophet and prayer and stuff. Then we left. They were so nice. THe coolest thing is that they almost never respond when people come unless they are expecting someone...which they weren't. But Rosalba told Antonio to anyway. She said, "I didn't know I was opening the door to Jesus!" It sure made us feel great. I see great potential in both of them!
We had a FHE with Pres and Sorella Kelly Monday night. We watched that movie 17 Miracles about the Pioneers. Most of us were bawling like babies! It was incredibel. That movie is so inspiring and humbling. Makes me think twice before complaining about anything I am doing being hard.
There were two baptisms in the other Bari was on Sunday. Angelo (the new convert) baptized one of them. He was very excited. But I think he was even more happy with the fact that he was worthy to do it. He has not been smoking for awhile now. So we are all really happy. We asked him if he was worth (degno) to perform the baptism, and he said really loud, with a great big smile, DEGNISSIMO! it was so cute. And he is so happy.
Yesterday we had zone conference. Everything taught was exactly what I needed to hear. I have been trying to figure out what I can do better to become a better missionary and everything that was said answered that. Now I need to not get overwhelmed with the giant list, and just take them one thing at a time and I honestly am so happy and joyful to have this great list of things I can be improving upon. I am most happy when i am progressing and getting better. So thank you so much for this opportunity to not only work on becoming a better missionary, but to become a better person to help build up the Lord's kingdom. I wish we could have zone conference every week! I love this work and I love this gospel. Pray for Dora especially and do everything you all can to help with this work.
Also....share your testimony with someone this week and write me about your experience.
Love you all,
Sorella Heiner
P.S. Mom, do I have a plaque up on the wall at the church? And do we get to have a scripture up there too as like our 'missionary scripture'? Everyone else does. Well... if I do, I want mine to be Romans 1:15-16. It is so awesome and perfect! Not every missionary can have the scriptures talk about the exact nation you will preach to. :)
And...I am very excited that Chase is doing Cross-Country! Tell him not to give up, not matter how tough practices may be...because those experiences are rare and so precious. He will create memories to last his lifetime. I am proud of him!

Happy New Year
[Email from 1/4/12]
Hello everyone...
So, New year's eve, we had to be in our apartments at 6 p.m. So we were out working and heading home just before then, when we saw these guys in an intersection stopping traffic. Then laying boxes of fireworks in the middle. So we stayed at watched. These guys launched off tons and tons of HUGE fireworks in the middle of an intersection. At one of these corners was a gas station. It was crazy and ridiculous. And some people in their cars just went right around these fireworks. It was so dangerous. I recorded all of it on my camera...but I don't think I can send it through e'mail. BUt it was funny. And then when we were in our apartment trying to go to bed and such, all we heard were loud cannon sounds of fireworks. We felt like we were in a war zone. It was like the cannon sounds from Pirates of the Caribbean on the Black Pearl. I am surprised I was able to sleep at all, but I managed. Apparently the thing most common for Italy for New Years is fireworks. This year they were supposed to be illegal, but they were everywhere, so there must not have been any cops working. ha But there were some deaths because of fireworks in Napoli or Taranto. And a Palazza caught on fire and killed and injured alot of people too. That is because they launch these big fireworks in small streets lined with apartments everywhere. It is crazy. And another tradition, is people throw furniture and dishes and things from the old year out their windows and get new ones for the new year. It is interesting. Ha and now I understand why we needed to be inside so early.
Dora called us yesterday and told us she doesn't know if she can get baptized because she doesn't feel secure yet and that she doesn't want to be a difficulty for us by making us keep visiting her. She actually tried that one on us once before... we tell her that we are here for her personally. And that we are happier when we get to see her. So she agreed to let us see her Thursday night. I know she is going to feel happy again when she meets with us. Because of the Holidays we haven't seen her for a week. And because of the holidays, she has missed 2 times of church. SO i think she is just missing the constant nourishment of the good word and spirit of god. So she will feel better once she gets back in the habit of seeing us and coming to church. But she needs alot of prayers because this is difficult for her. Pray for her.
Today we went to Matera for p'day. It was really cool. It is where they filmed Passion of Christ with Mel Gibson...well that's the rumor through missionaries. It was really pretty though. Old town Italy for sure. I took alot of pictures.
Love you all,
Sorella Heiner

Christmas has passed
[Email from 12/28/11]
So getting to skype the family was absolutely awesome. I was really nervous that you would be able to tell all the weight I have gained, but I guess it is just my pasta belly that I have. Um everyone seems great and Keightley is super tiny. I wish I could hold her. I miss holding babies and playing with little kids. We aren't allowed to do that for liability reasons.
I got the two packages that arrived at the Mission Office in Rome. The CDs from Ian (I assume you are my secret santa by the verbage of the letter) and the one from mom with make up and such. It is all great and I am excited to listen to the stuff. Also...mom, when you send me another package, there is one thing I REALLY need. You seem to forget this one every time. It is LIQUID CONSEALER by CoverGirl. Ask Brittany if you don't know what I am talking about. It has a blue handle and is the color Buff Beige.
Parker, I have not recieved your package yet, but I am keeping my eyes peeled for it. THanks in advance.
So for dinner Christmas Eve, we ate lots of seafood!! Yuck!! For one of our appetizers, we had raw salmon on slices of bread with mayo. Then the first course was spaghetti noodles with lots of seafood stuff. Like crab arms, mussels, shrimp with shell on and some with shell off, little squids, some slices of octopus, and other nasty sea creatuers I can't remember. It was aweful, but everything was cooked.
Then the next course was these big red shrimp things...WHOLE. Legs, eyes, tail, everything. Cooked also. We had to peel them ourselves and touching them freaked me out really bad. I was like shaking the whole time from touching them. Then we had whole fish...pink fish. With eyes, fins, and bones and everything. And I asked, WHY IS THIS FISH PINK? and the dad of the house said, BECAUSE IT IS A PINK FISH! It was really funny, and I was slightly embarrassed. THen we had our fruit course. THen dessert. It was really bad...but an experience of a lifetime. Only Bari eats like this for Christmas. I heard the rest of Italy eats normalish stuff. Still think I live a charmed life mom? Ha Oh and I told them that dad really likes seafood and so they said they will make sure to make something for him when he comes. Also, everyone sets off fireworks on Christmas Eve. It kept us up past 1 in the morning. It was really annoying. And I kept having nightmares of those shrimp running all over me. Not a weekend of alot of sleep.
Christmas day we had church all together with the other ward. THen members brought food for us and we remained at church and ate with the missionaries. We had way too much food, which we are still living on today.
Monday was a holiday here, and so we got a missionary holiday, We were allowed to watch a movie. So we watched Tangled and Up. Oh man...I miss movies...but while watching the second movie, I kept thinking about how I want to go out and teach people. It is strange how the mission changes your way of thinking.
Well I am going to attach the pictures from this weekend, so gotta go. Love you all and have a great New Year. I will hear from you in 2012!
Love always,
Sorella Heiner

Christmas Eve Dinner!
Here is all the food we ate.

Here is a nativity scene we have in our church. A member made it. THis
is pretty much how all of the nativity scenes here are like. Can you
find the important part with Mary, Joseph and Jesus? Haha

[Email from 12/21/11]
Okay, I just don't have much time.
It's my birthday today...thanks for all the birthday wishes. I am supposed to go celebrate it tomorrow at lunch with the nasty cat lady in my ward. Well she isn't nasty, but her house and food are. We don't really have the time so we are planning to cancel or something. She wants to make me a cake. Yuck. I got a phone call from Sorella Kelly and she wished me happy birthday. THat was nice. Anziano mickelsen gave me a bottle of almond syrup for making almond milk because I have been wanting to try it.
In church, we had two TJ's show up in our gospel principles lesson. I was really nervous because we were teaching. Anz. Mickelsen invited them to come to church. They made him really mad after because they were telling us that we should not be teaching about Charity but should teach about Love. So confused.
I was sick yesterday and stayed in all day. Sorella Kelly told me to stay in today too, but we'll see.
Dora is just glowing everytime we see her. She loves the gospel, prayer, and the scriptures. She has gradually changed into a new person with a light about her. She is so beautiful when she glows. I can't wait for her to be baptized.
Angelo is struggling with smoking...he doesn't know that we know, but we have been hinting and he talked with bishop last week. Pray for him because he is really struggling.
Gotta go, I will talk to you on Saturday!
Love you all,
Sorella Heiner
Um...I will try to call at 5 or 5:30 on Saturday night my time. Sorella Hicks can't get ahold of her family to change times with them, so hopefully everything works out. But dad said 7 will not work anymore, so see you all at 5.
